The purpose of this study is to investigate the challenges of students who come from singlernparents in attaining secondary school education at Yekatite 66 secondary school in Arada subrncity of Addis Ababa. In order to obtain relevant information in depth, semi-structured interviewsrnwere conducted with single parented students and their teachers with the combination of FocusrnGroup Discussion (FGD) as well as document review. For this purpose, the data were collectedrnfrom ten students from single parents and five teachers have participated in the study to obtainrnthe necessary data.The data collected were analyzed using thematic analysis or major idearnanalysis. The findings from the study revealed that challenges that single parented students facernin attaining secondary education are multidimensional and complex. They are complex becausernone causes the other or no single challenge that stand on its own. Those challenges are economicrnhard ship, poor parental care, low parental involvement and emotional challenges (loneliness,rnhesitation for their parents love and helpless). In consequence, those challenges have negativerneffects on single parented studentsâ€™ class attendance, concentration, academic performance,rnbehavior and forced them to drop out of the school. The study also suggests that the schoolrnencourage educating youths to be economically self supportive and good family members. Thernschool guidance and counseling officers should work co-operately to the school administration inrnorder to identify and to support students from single parent homes to overcome their emotionalrnproblems. This will help them to concentrate and work hard at school as the same time it willrnimprove their academic as well as their future life.
