Parental Support For Children With Intellectual Disability Practices Challenges And Opportunities At Tekle Haimanot General Primary School

The major purpose of this study was to assess the practice, challenges, and opportunities of rnparental support for children with intellectual disability at Tekelehayimanot general primary rnschool. To achieve the stated objectives, a case study, and qualitative research design were used.rnParents, teachers, counselor, and school directors were selected by available sampling technique. rnInterviews and focus group discussion, were used as instruments of data collection and data wasrnaudio recorded and note taken. The collected data was analyzed through description, coding and rncategorizing in to themes and sub themes and interpretation of the major themes were used to rnreach at major findings of the study. Based on the data analyzed, the researcher reach at the rnfollowing major findings were identified. First, there were better parental support practice for rnchildren with intellectual disability on the ground. Such as, provision of educational materials and rnprovide training on four basic adaptive behavioral skills. Second, lot of support practice was left rnto mothers and mothers have more burden than that of fathers in supporting practice. Third, with rnregard to the practice of supporting their children’s education and adaptive behavioral skills rntraining development, there were lots of challenges like low economic status and large family size, rnlow educational status, lack of training, and impact of corona virus with some opportunities to rnchildren with intellectual disability and their parents. Such as, social support, modeling, learn rnfrom other, attitudinal change towards disability and other opportunities which was important for rnboth parents of children with intellectual disability and their children.
