The purpose of this study was to examine the models, whichrnmight be appropriate to represent the attrition rate ofrnstudents at the Faculty of Business and Economics (FBE),rnAddis Ababa University (AAU). In addition, the studyrnattempted to estimate the magnitude and pattern ofrnacademic survival rates of students and compares thernsurvival rates of male and female students.rnThe attrition data from the batch of 1994/95 to 1998/99rnwere used in the study. The data sources were the RecordsrnOffice of FBE and the Office of the Registrar of AAU.rnThe findings of the study revealed that among thernfour models examined, two of the Guttman and Olkinrnmodel (1989) and the reparametrized modelrn(Temesgen,1991) were found to be adequate tornrepresent the attrition rate of students at FBE.rnThe findings also showed that about 67% of thernstudents of Batch I was able to complete fivernsemesters while this figure increased to 88% forrnBatch V. Here it should be noted that the academicrnsurvival rates of students increased from batch tornbatch. It was also found that even though thernsurvival rates of female students was lower thanrnmale students for the five batches, still therernwas no observed statistical difference between thernacademic survival rates of male and femalernstudents
