The purpose of this study was to investigate therncommunicative as well as target and learning needs of therntechnical students with special reference to three technicalrnschools in Addis Ababa with a view to developing criteriarnfor designing an appropriate English course for thesernstudents.rnFor the study! questionnaires were designed andrndistributed to three different groups: English teachers!rnacademic and technical subject teachers and technicalrnstudents.rnInterviews were conducted with English teachers andrntechnical students to crosscheck responses obtained throughrnquestionnaires.rnAn analysis of the English textbooks was made to findrnout the most frequent language functions and notionsrnstudents needed.rnThe basic criteria developed from the findings are thatrnthe syllabus should be topic-based incorporating languagernfunctions and notions! skills! vocabulary and structure; therncontent should derive both from the technical and generalrnEnglish; the materials should cover all the four languagernskills with emphasis placed in order of priority on reading!rnspeakin~ writing and listening skills and the methodologyrnwould adopt a variety of more recent and suitable techniquesrnfor language learning such as pair or group work problemrnsolving activities.
