The purpose of the study was to find out the views ofrnAAU freshman students regarding the task-based approach tornELT as compared to their previous English language learningrnexperiences. The sample population of the study were 178rnAAU freshman students on th~ Main and Arat Kilo campuses.rnThese subjects had been exposed to the new Freshman Englishrnmaterials since their arrival at the university.rnTo obtain the necessary information, a questionnairernwi th nineteen items that aimed to assess views on 1)rnstructure-based approach (2) task-based approach, and 3)rnclassroom organizations w~ prepared and administered tornthe students. To consolidate the information obtainedrnthrough the questionnaire, classroom observations were alsorncarried out.rnThe students' views on the structure - and task-basedrnapproaches were compared. The study showed that there wasrna significant statistical difference between the students'rnviews on the two approaches. The students' views on therntask-based approach were more positive than their views onrnthe structural approach.rnAn at.tempt was also made to assess the students' viewsrnon the classroom organizations pertinent to the task-basedrnapproach. The study showed that the respondents favouredrnthe organizational techniques like pair and group work whichrnsuited the task-based language learning activities.rnAs a whole the study showed that the respondents werernmore favourably disposed towards the task-based approach inrngeneral, and about the new materials and the methodologyrnused-to implement the approach in particular.
