This study is an attempt to investigate and describe the current speakingrnstrategies used by first year diploma students majoring English at the Kotebe Collegernof Teacher Education. 25 students were involved and four research instrumentsrnnamely: a questionnaire, interviews, classroom observation and video-recording werernused in collecting data from the students.rnThe first chapter of this paper deals with a statement of the problem, the purposernand significance of the study, definition of terms, scope, and limitation of the study.rnChapter two is devoted to reviewing related literature dealing with background researchrnin learning strategies in general and the research studies in speaking strategies inrnparticular, the research studies regarding learning strategies in Ethiopia, and finally thernplace of speaking in language learning. In the third chapter, the research procedure isrndescribed followed by the results and discussion in the fourth chapter. The fifth andrnfinal chapter consists of implications and recommendations made on the basis of thernresults of this study.rnThe results revealed that the majority of the subjects involved in this study werernfound to be strategic and generally to utilize various speaking strategies believed byrnresearchers to facilitate successful speaking. According to the results, although thernsubjects appeared to be generally promising and with remarkable interest to developrntheir speaking skill, there were certain strategies which were either rarely or never usedrnby them. Some known strategies appeared to be used less frequently and were lessrndeveloped. The possible reason could be lack of awareness and experience in usingrnthem. Consequently, it is recommended that the students need to be helped inrnbecoming aware of the various strategies they can use to facilitate their speaking.
