The purpose of this study was to investigate high school students' current perception ofrnEnglish language learning in relation to the new language teaching approach adoptedrnrecently. An attempt has been made to examine how high school students perceive thernnature of language, the functions of an English language teacher and their own role asrnlanguage learners. The study involved 200 grade 11 students.rnThe major instruments in this study were questionnaire and interview. The questionnairerncontained 24 items which were classified into four groups. To consolidate the informationrnobtained through the questionnaire, interviews were also conducted with the sampledrnstudents.rnThe study showed that most of the sampled students seemed to hold traditionalrnperception of language learning. The study revealed that the students assessed morernpositively their perception of the nature of language, the functions of the languagernclassrooms, their teacher's role and their own roles in the traditional approaches than inrnthe more current ones.
