The purpose of this study was to find out whether or not 3rd year Bahir,rnUniversity English major students made strive towards autonomous learning.rnThe study particularly aimed at examining students' use of cognitive,rnmeta cognitive, self-assessment and self-access learning strategies.rnTo this effect, two techniques of data collection instruments were devised:rnquestionnaire and interviews. Open ended and close ended questionnaire wererndistributed to 60 students and interview was held with 10 students.rnThe data obtained from the questionnaire and interviews were analyzed. Thernresults of the analysis revealed that the subjects use cognitive strategies inrntheir language learning process frequently. However, the subjects employ meta cognitivernstrategies rarely. It was also found out that the students lack thernability to self-assess their progress and reflect back up on their learningrnprocess. Furthermore, it was indicated that the subjects participate in outsidernclassroom listening frequently since it holds learners' attention. On therncontrary, they participate in outside classroom speaking and reading rarely.rnOn the basis of these results, it is recommended that the students need to berntrained to be aware of the value of using learning strategies reflection andrnoutside classroom learning and how to use them effectively so that they canrnmake a meaningful progress towards autonomy.
