The main objective of this study was to investigate into student-teacher attitudes to gradern9 reading texts and exercises. The study was carried out on 120 grade 9 students and 20rnEnglish teachers from the high schools in IIIubabor Zone.rnIt is using questionnaires and interviews that relevant data for this study were collected .rnAmong other things, the analysis of the data would seem to suggest that there are morerndifferences in att itudes to reading texts between students and teachers than there are morernsimilarities. The interview resu lts justified this lack of congruence between students' andrnteachers ' attitudes to read ing texts. On the other hand, it was found out that both studentsrnand teachers have more or less similar views regarding reading exercises and teachingrnprocedures. Accordingly, the poor language background students have, among otherrnthings/factors, reportedly was found to be accountable for learners to have negativernreactions towards different aspects of reading texts and exerci ses. Teachers' attitudesrnwere attributed mainly to the ease with which they handled the reading texts andrnexercises with the teaching procedures recommended in the Teacher's Book, and thernextent to whi ch the texts and exercises help learners succeed in other academic subjects.rnBased on the findings it is recommended that both students and teachers should bernconvinced about the roles the reading texts and exercises play in other academic subjects,rnand put in their efforts accordingly.
