The study was designed to analyze the verbal and visual contents ofrngrade five and six textbooks of Tigray Region with respect to the portrayalrnof gender. To conduct the research content analysis was used. A stratifiedrnrandom sampling technique was employed to select the textbook analysis.rnIn this technique, 40 percent (8 textbooks) from the total 20 textbooks werernused for the analysis. On the basis of categories frequency counts werernmade and the frequency counts were changed into percentages. The chisquarern(X2) statistical test was employed to analyze the data and to checkrnwhether or not significant difference existed between the two sexes.rnThe study revealed that there was a significant difference between the twornsexes in the verbal and visual occupational representation of the tworngrades. In the verbal character traits, male and female sexes wererndepicted stereo typically, with a significant difference between male andrnfemale coverage. However, the visual character traits representation of therntwo sexes showed an insignificant difference. Balanced treatments werernmade for both sexes .rnAs the study result indicates, there is gender bias in textbooks and it isrnrecommendable that textbook writers in particular and curriculumrndevelopers m general should gwe special attention to genderrnrepresentation in the preparation of textbooks.
