Child Abuse And Neglect Among Children Cared By Female Domestic Workers In Addis Ababa

This study assesses the prevalence of child abuse and neglect,rntogether with factors related to children's risk of abuse andrnneglect in domestic workers' child cares. Data were collected fromrn58 mothers of young children and 23 domestic worker childrncaregivers. Sample groups were selected from Gulelle. KolfernKeranho, Arada and Addis Ketema sub cities of Addis Ababa byrnusing purposive and random sampling techniques.rnQuestionnaires were employed to gather the intended data. Forrnanalysis both qualitative and quantitative data analysis methodsrnwere used. The numerical differences were tested with chi-square.rnChild abuse and neglect were prevalent in domestic workers' childrncares. PhYSical abuse and neglect, among the prevailed childrnmaltreatment, were the dominant form though others werernevident too. The strongest correlates of child abuse and neglect tornbe caregivers' age, prior history of abuse or neglect, and child'srnage. Some inconsistence, however, were observed between therndata obtained from the two sample groups. The inflictedrnmaltreatment was resulted in both physical and psychologicalrndamages. The implications for policy makers and future researchrnare discussed.
