The main purpose of this study was to investigate factors for the dropping out of females pomrnFAL program. The study was conjined to two Woredas- Debre Berhan and Tarma Ber, in NorthrnShoa Zone of Amhara Region. Twenty jive drop out adult females, 16 facilitators and 4rncoordinators were used as data sources which were selected using multistage samplingrntechniques. To obtain the required information questionnaires, interviews, FGDs, and checklistrnwere used as data gathering tools. Then data gathered through questionnaires werernquantitatively analyzed using Ji'equency counts and percentages and interpreted in light ofrnavailable literature whereas the information obtained through interviews and FGDs werernqualitatively analyzed and interpreted. Besides, information obtained through checklists andrnobservations were also used as supplement while analyzing and interpreting both quantitativernand qualitative data. The overall results of the study show that personal factors like lack ofrnawareness on the meaning and importance of FAULiteracy and lack of motivation by the targetrngroups have been identified as major problems influencing them to affend the FAL program. Thernresults of the study fitrther revealed that socio-economic constraints like lack of literaternenvironments, poverty and HTPs such as work taboo, negative attitudes of husbands and societyrntowards their wives learning and female education respectively were found to be major barriersrnto target groups to affend FAL classes. On top of this, program related factors like irrelevance ofrnthe FAL contents, scarcity of teaching materials, poor methods of teaching used and poor coordinationrnamong concerned stakeholders were also found to be another obstacles against FALrnclass attendance by the target groups. To alleviate those problems it is recommended that carefilirnplanning by involving all stakeholders and giving due attention to this sub-sector isrnindispensable
