The Effects Of English-hausa Code Switching On The Teaching Of Essay Writing To Arabic Medium Students In Saadatu Rimi College Of Eduction Kumbotso Kano
The study aimed at determining whether English-Hausa code-switching can serve as a strategy for teaching content development, organization, expression and mechanical accuracy in essay writing to the Arabic medium students. The subjects who participated in the study of N.C.E 1 Arabic Medium students in their General English course from Department of Arabic in SRCOE, Kumbotso. Simple percentages were used to analyze the marks awarded. The result reveals that students‟ competence before treatment was very low and caused by such factors as low proficiency in the use of language, and the misapplication of rules, as well as the interference of the first language [MT]of the subjects. This study examines the effects of English-Hausa code switching as a strategy for teaching essay writing to Arabic Medium students in Sa‟adatuRimi College of Education, Kumbotso,Kano. Letter and essay writing tests were collected to find out whether there are significant differences in teaching essay writing using code switching to the L2 learners or not in the respondents written English. The problem which this study examined is that a number of errors and deviant forms in language use have been noticed in the students‟ essay writing, such as content mastery, incorrect organization, expression and mechanical accuracy.
