Epidemiological Study Of Trichinosis In Kaduna State Of Nigeria

Tongue and diaphragm samples were collected from atotal of 620 pigs slaughtered at different locations inKaduna State of Nigeria, and 240 randomly trapped brownfield rats (Arvicanthus niloticus). between August,1987 and Nay, 1989. All samples were separatelysubjected to the artificial enzymatic digestiontechnique (using 1% acid pepsin). In addition,carcasses were grossly examined for the presence ofcystic lesions. Records of striated muscle biopsiesdone between 1975 and 1987 at Ahmadu Bello UniversityTeaching Hospital (ABUTH) Zaria, were also reviewed forcases of Trichinella spiral is infection.L- spiral is larvae were recorded in three (0.57.)of the 620 pigs sampled. In all positive cases, larvaewere recovered only from the diaphragm and none fromthe tongue. Less than one larva per gram ofmusculature was recovered. Gross examination of swinecarcasses revealed Cysticercus eellulosae cysts in13(2.1"/.) of the pigs. Such cysts were distributed invarious parts of the body including the tongue (23.17.),thigh muscle (23.17.), masticatory muscle (23.17.),diaphragm (15.47.) and heart (15.47.).aAll the tissues of the brown, field rats examinedwere negative for T. spiralis larvae. Also records ofthe human muscle biopsies reviewed did net reveal anycase of trichinosis being diagnosed. However, thepotential for human infections does exist.
