academic staff from six tertiary institutions in Yobe state. A total of 234academic staff were used as representative sample. The survey study methodwas adopted for the study. The instrument used in the study was developedby the researcher after validation by the researcher’s supervisor. A pilot studywas conducted using the instrument. Six (6) null hypotheses were formulatedand tested at 0. 05 significance level. Statistical tools used were crosstabulation and percentages, frequency distribution and one way analysis ofvariance (ANOVA) all the hypotheses were rejected. The study revealed thatacademic staff in tertiary institutions in Yobe were motivated with theavailability of instructional materials for teaching and learning. It was foundout that academic staff were motivated with staff development and trainingand the encouragement given to them to go for in – service training. Also theresult of the study showed that academic staff of tertiary institutions in Yobestate were leaving the institutions to more lucrative organizations perhaps dueto inadequate salary packages. It was therefore recommended that tertiaryinstitutions in Yobe state should open more training programmes whichwould equally be accessible to all academic staff. The heads of tertiaryinstitutions should involved academic staff in decision-making process intheir institutions. Based on the findings of the study appropriaterecommendations were made.
