One type of atmospheric condensation nucleusi s the Aitken p a r t i c l e which has r a d i i rangingbetween 0.005 and 0.1 microns. In t h i s work,a locally constructed condensation nucleus counters u i t a b l e for the measurement of the concentrationof Aitken nuclei in the Harmattan haze isdescribed.F i l t e r e d a i r is drawn into the previouslyevacuated . system to a pressure of about 2 x 104Pa and then released. The concentration of theAitken nuclei in the air drawn into the apparatusis deduced from the reading of the photocurrentsIo and I through the pressurized and rarefied a irin the system respectively.Measurements of p a r t i c l e s in ambient air withthe counter show that the concentration of Aitkennuclei in the l o c a l i t y is up to 3 x 1011 p a r t i c l esper l i t r e.
