As we all know urban poverty is one of the major problems of Ethiopia. Thernmain objective of this study was to assess household poverty in AddisrnAbaba by taking two kebeles of Addis ketema sub-city.rnIn order to achieve the objective of the study from the study population ofrn55,762 household heads 200 samples were selected through randomrnsampling method. The study used both primary and secondary datarnsources. Data was analyzed and interpreted mainly through quantitativernmethod and it was supported by qualitative method.rnThe two dominant approaches of poverty analysis- income and welfarernwere adopted. Income and expenditure of the household were viewed fromrnthe perspective of household size, education, age, martial status, andrnemployment. Welfare is also analyzed through the nature of the housern(wall type, construction material for floor and material of roof), houserntenure, renting, number of rooms, supply of drinking water, main source ofrnlight, use of kitchen, energy consumption, toilet, bathing facility, andrnhealth condition. Coping strategies like saving, aid, migration, and cuttingrndown meals per day were identified in the study.rnThe result of the study in general showed that households in the selectedrnareas have quite low income and most of them depend on one source ofrnincome. 51.9 percent of the surveyed population is employed themselves inrnpetty trade. 32.5 percent of the households earn with a gap of 401-700 perrnmonth. More than 34.4 percent of the households’ income couldn’t coverrntheir monthly expenditure. Divorced and widowed which accounted 22.5rnand 19.0 percent, respectively, sections of the society experience morernpoverty than those who are not. Besides, 40.0 percent categorizedrnthemselves as very poor when compared with other community. Most ofrnthe respondents (50.0 percent) have experience of food shortage and out ofrnthis food insecure households (50.9 percent) of the respondents use cuttingrndown the amount of their meal (frequency at two times per day is arndominant means) in order to cope up the food shortage.rnBased on the findings, the study recommended that investment onrninfrastructure is highly recommendable for the problems like housingrnshortage, overcrowding, rents affordable relative to income and the qualityrnof houses. Health coverage, water and sanitation facilities also need to getrnimmediate attention by the development sector
