2026 International Student Financial Guide

Securing a Fully Funded Scholarship is only the first step. Many Nigerian students are now utilizing No-Cosigner Student Loans through providers like MPOWER Financing and Prodigy Finance to cover living expenses in the USA, Canada, and the UK.

Proof of Funds & GRE Waivers

If you are applying to Ivy League or Russell Group Universities, look for programs offering Graduate Assistantships. Many top-tier universities are currently granting GRE and GMAT Waivers for African applicants with strong professional backgrounds or high GPAs from recognized institutions.

WES Evaluation and English Tests

For Canada and the US, a WES Course-by-Course Evaluation is often mandatory. Additionally, if your degree was taught in English, you may qualify for an IELTS/TOEFL Waiver, saving you significant costs during the Graduate Admissions process.

Applications are now open for the University of Alberta International Entrance Scholarships 2027, a generous set of merit-based awards for international students beginning their first year of undergraduate study in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. The University of Alberta awards more than CAD 53 million each year in undergraduate scholarships, awards and financial support, and its international entrance awards include some of the largest undergraduate awards available to students entering on a study permit.

This is a partial funding opportunity, not a single fully funded scholarship for every recipient. Award values vary widely, from automatic admission-based awards of up to CAD 10,000 to prestigious application-based awards worth up to CAD 120,000 over four years. The University of Alberta states clearly that it does not offer full scholarships for either domestic or international students, so successful applicants should still plan funding for remaining tuition, living costs, accommodation, books and travel.

What does the scholarship cover?

The main international entrance awards listed by the University of Alberta are:

- President's International Distinction Scholarship: up to CAD 120,000, payable over four years, for 25 students each year with a superior admission average and demonstrated leadership qualities, entering first year on a student visa permit

- Chan Pang Kuen Memorial International Distinction Scholarship: up to CAD 120,000, payable over four years, for students with a superior admission average and demonstrated leadership qualities, entering first year on a student visa permit

- May Quon Undergraduate Scholarship: up to CAD 100,000, payable over four years, for students with a superior admission average and self-declared financial need, entering first year on a student visa permit, who are Chinese or Hong Kong citizens

- Cora Martinson International Scholarship: up to CAD 56,000, payable over four years, for students with superior academic achievement entering any year of an undergraduate degree at Augustana Faculty on a student visa permit, with preference for indicated financial need

- International Leader Scholarship: up to CAD 15,000, for well-rounded applicants with superior academics and leadership in school, community organisations, extracurricular activities or the workplace

- International Admission Scholarship (admission-based, no separate application): up to CAD 10,000, based on admission average

- Regional Excellence Scholarship (admission-based, no separate application): up to CAD 5,000, for top students from certain regions, based on admission average

Admission-based scholarships require no separate scholarship application. You are assessed automatically when you apply for admission, based on your high school admission average at the time of your admission offer, and the university will contact you directly if you are eligible.

Application-based scholarships are assessed through a single scholarship application form. The university uses that one application to match you to every application-based award you may be eligible for, based on academics, leadership, inclusion and financial need.

Who can apply? Eligibility requirements

To be considered for entrance scholarships, applicants must:

- Be entering directly from high school, or have taken time off without receiving post-secondary credit

- Meet or exceed the required admission average

- Be entering the first year of full-time study in an undergraduate degree programme at the University of Alberta in September 2027

- For the international awards above, be studying in Canada on a student visa permit, where the award description requires it

The university notes that its scholarship competitions are competitive, and meeting the eligibility requirements does not guarantee an award. Entrance award offers are conditional on the accuracy of self-recorded grades, and an offer could be revoked if final official transcripts differ.

How to apply: step-by-step

1. Apply for admission to your chosen undergraduate programme at the University of Alberta for September 2027. You will need a CCID and password to apply for scholarships, which can take two to three business days to generate after you apply for admission.

2. If you only want to be considered for admission-based awards, no separate scholarship application is needed. You are assessed automatically on your admission average.

3. For application-based awards, complete the single scholarship application through the University of Alberta Awards Hub after you have applied for admission. Review the university's tips for applying before you start.

4. Submit the application-based scholarship application by 10 January 2027. Do not leave it until the final day, in case you need time to complete the form or gather details.

5. Offers for application-based scholarships will be made starting in early winter.
