Applications are now open for the Richmond Scholars Program 2027, the University of Richmond's most prestigious undergraduate merit scholarship for outstanding first-year students starting in Fall 2027. The University of Richmond, a private liberal arts university in Richmond, Virginia, awards this scholarship to just 25 incoming students each year — and international students receive full consideration for it.
Securing a Fully Funded Scholarship is only the first step. Many Nigerian students are now utilizing No-Cosigner Student Loans through providers like MPOWER Financing and Prodigy Finance to cover living expenses in the USA, Canada, and the UK.
If you are applying to Ivy League or Russell Group Universities, look for programs offering Graduate Assistantships. Many top-tier universities are currently granting GRE and GMAT Waivers for African applicants with strong professional backgrounds or high GPAs from recognized institutions.
For Canada and the US, a WES Course-by-Course Evaluation is often mandatory. Additionally, if your degree was taught in English, you may qualify for an IELTS/TOEFL Waiver, saving you significant costs during the Graduate Admissions process.
What makes Richmond Scholars different from most full-ride awards is its simplicity: there is no separate scholarship application, no extra essay and no separate form. Your complete first-year admission application is your scholarship application — but only if it is complete by 1 December 2026. Apply later than that, and you miss Richmond Scholars consideration, even though the general Regular Decision deadline is later.
What does the scholarship cover?
The Richmond Scholars Program is equal to full tuition, housing and food, plus other program benefits, according to the University of Richmond. It is renewable for up to eight consecutive semesters of full-time undergraduate enrolment, including study abroad, provided the recipient meets the requirements in the initial award notification and maintains satisfactory academic progress.
In short, Richmond Scholars receive:
- Full undergraduate tuition for up to four years (eight semesters)
- University housing
- Food (meal plan)
- Other Richmond Scholars program benefits, including mentorship and programming as part of a small, multidisciplinary scholars community
This is a merit award, not a need-based grant. It recognises academic achievement, engaged leadership, a strong sense of purpose, and investment in a diverse and inclusive campus community — the qualities the University of Richmond says define its scholars.
It does not necessarily cover every cost of studying in the United States. Students should budget separately for costs not covered by the award, such as travel, books, personal expenses and any other charges outside tuition, housing and food, and should check the university's published cost of attendance for the full picture.
Who can apply? Eligibility requirements
To be considered for the Richmond Scholars Program for Fall 2027, you must:
- Be applying for first-year undergraduate admission to the University of Richmond for Fall 2027
- Submit a complete admission application by 1 December 2026 — this is the only requirement for Richmond Scholars consideration, and no separate application is required
- Be an incoming first-year, degree-seeking applicant — Richmond states that all first-year applicants, including Early Action, Early Decision I, Early Decision II and Regular Decision applicants, are eligible to be considered for merit scholarships
International students are eligible. The University of Richmond states that international students, non-U.S. citizens and non-U.S. permanent residents may receive full consideration for all merit-based scholarships, with the exception of the Army ROTC scholarship program. For full scholarship eligibility, international applicants should submit their admission application by the 1 December Richmond Scholars deadline.
Two important conditions apply to international applicants:
- Admission for non-U.S. citizens and non-U.S. permanent residents is need-aware, meaning ability to pay for four years of study is considered during the admission review
- All non-U.S. citizens and non-U.S. permanent residents must submit the University of Richmond Certification of Financial Responsibility for admission consideration
Applicants who need need-based aid should also submit the required financial aid documents by the financial aid deadline for their admission plan, including the CSS Profile where applicable. Richmond states it is committed to meeting the full demonstrated financial need of all admitted domestic and international applicants.
How to apply: step-by-step
1. Choose your undergraduate course at the University of Richmond and check the first-year admission requirements, including English-language proficiency requirements for international applicants where applicable.
2. Apply for first-year undergraduate admission to the University of Richmond through the Common Application or Coalition Application, following the university's admission instructions.
3. Make sure your application is complete by 1 December 2026. Richmond states that all applicants for first-year admission are automatically considered for Richmond Scholars, provided they submit a complete admission application by that date.
4. Submit the University of Richmond Certification of Financial Responsibility if you are a non-U.S. citizen or non-U.S. permanent resident, and any financial aid documents required for your admission plan.
5. Wait for the selection process: finalists are notified through the university's applicant portal, interview with a faculty selection committee, and final selections are completed by 1 March 2027, according to the university's published selection timeline for the program.
There is no separate Richmond Scholars form to chase, so the real risk is a late or incomplete admission application. Check your applicant portal after submission to confirm every required document has arrived before 1 December 2026.
Deadline and key dates
- Richmond Scholars consideration deadline: 1 December 2026 (complete first-year admission application must be submitted by this date)
- General Regular Decision admission deadline: 1 January 2027 — note this is too late for Richmond Scholars consideration
- Finalist notification: by 1 February 2027
- Finalist interviews: mid-February 2027
- Final selection: by 1 March 2027
- Study starts: Fall 2027
Why this scholarship is worth applying for
With only 25 awards each year, Richmond Scholars is highly competitive — but it is also one of the clearest full-ride routes in the United States for international students. There is no extra scholarship essay, no nomination, and no separate portal: a strong, complete, on-time admission application puts you in the running for full tuition, housing and food for four years.
If you are a high-achieving final-year secondary school student with a record of leadership and community engagement, and the University of Richmond is on your list, treat 1 December 2026 as your real deadline — not 1 January.
