University Of Warwick Postgraduate Research Scholarships 2027 In The Uk: Fully Funded Phd Study For International Researchers

University of Warwick Postgraduate Research Scholarships 2027 in the UK: Fully Funded PhD Study for International Researchers

2026 International Student Financial Guide

Securing a Fully Funded Scholarship is only the first step. Many Nigerian students are now utilizing No-Cosigner Student Loans through providers like MPOWER Financing and Prodigy Finance to cover living expenses in the USA, Canada, and the UK.

Proof of Funds & GRE Waivers

If you are applying to Ivy League or Russell Group Universities, look for programs offering Graduate Assistantships. Many top-tier universities are currently granting GRE and GMAT Waivers for African applicants with strong professional backgrounds or high GPAs from recognized institutions.

WES Evaluation and English Tests

For Canada and the US, a WES Course-by-Course Evaluation is often mandatory. Additionally, if your degree was taught in English, you may qualify for an IELTS/TOEFL Waiver, saving you significant costs during the Graduate Admissions process.

If you are planning doctoral study in the UK for October 2027, the University of Warwick's Postgraduate Research Scholarships are one of the strongest fully funded opportunities currently open. Warwick is offering up to 80 postgraduate research scholarships for Autumn 2027 entry, across six funding streams, through a single application. You do not need to submit a separate application for each stream: one scholarship application puts you in consideration for the streams you are eligible for.

This is a research-degree opportunity, not a taught master's award. It is for applicants beginning an eligible postgraduate research course at Warwick in October 2027, and it covers a wide range of disciplines across the university.

What the scholarship offers

Warwick states that all of its Postgraduate Research scholarships include:

  • Full payment of your academic fees, at the UK or international rate.
  • A tax-free maintenance stipend to support living costs.
  • Full-time or part-time study options, subject to visa requirements. Part-time funding is at 60%, with a proportionally longer funding period.
  • Up to eight weeks of annual leave per year.
  • The option to suspend your studies temporarily, for example for health or personal reasons.
  • Access to personal and professional development opportunities.

Warwick also lists scheme benefits including a stipend at the UKRI rate for 3.5 years, a £5,000 Research, Training and Support Grant (RTSG), paid leave for family and medical reasons, and — for eligible international applicants — the opportunity to apply for support towards UK visa and immigration costs. Because individual streams carry their own additional benefits and criteria, check the stream guidance on Warwick's official page before you apply.

This is a fully funded award in the sense that matters most to doctoral applicants: fees are covered in full and a living-cost stipend is provided. It is not a partial tuition discount.

The six scholarship streams

Warwick's 2027 competition brings together the following streams:

  • Faculty Chancellors — up to 30 awards
  • Interdisciplinary Chancellors — up to 12 awards
  • AHRC Doctoral Scholarships — up to 3 awards
  • Doctoral Access – Pathway — up to 3 awards
  • Doctoral Access – Sanctuary — up to 2 awards
  • China Scholarship Council — up to 30 awards

The Chancellor's streams are open to applicants of any nationality or fee status. Other streams have their own additional eligibility rules — the China Scholarship Council stream, for example, operates through that scheme — so read the official competition page carefully and apply for the streams that fit your situation.

Who can apply

To be considered for any Warwick Postgraduate Research scholarship, you must:

  • Apply for an eligible postgraduate research course at the University of Warwick to begin in October 2027. Eligible courses include a PhD, MPhil/PhD, EngD, and the PhD stage of a Masters+PhD course, such as a 1+3 or 2+4 route.
  • Be starting in the academic year 2027/28.
  • Not be a current postgraduate research student at Warwick — current postgraduate research students are not eligible to apply for this competition.

Scholarships cannot be deferred to a future academic year. If you are successful, you must start as specified in your application.

How to apply

Warwick's process has two separate stages, and the order — and the gap between them — matters. Do not treat the course application as the scholarship application.

  1. Read Warwick's PGR Scholarship Competency-Based Assessment Criteria and Applicant Guidance Notes, published on the official competition page. Selection is competency-based, so this guidance is essential reading, not an optional extra.
  2. Submit your course application for an eligible postgraduate research course by the course application deadline.
  3. Wait for the automated email containing your seven-digit applicant ID number. Warwick advises allowing at least 48 hours for this to arrive, and notes that the Doctoral College cannot issue ID numbers.
  4. Register your ITS applicant account using that ID number.
  5. Submit your scholarship application, with any required supporting documents, through Warwick's scholarships portal by the scholarship application deadline.
  6. Results will be communicated by email by 5 March 2027.

Warwick is blunt about timing: it strongly advises preparing well in advance, because it is not usually possible to complete and submit an application in less than 36 hours, and late applications are not accepted. In practice, that means you should submit the course application well before its deadline, so the 48-hour wait for your applicant ID does not eat into your scholarship-application window.

Important deadlines

All deadlines are at 16:59 GMT, and late submissions are not accepted:

  • Course applications: 7 December 2026
  • Scholarship applications: 10 December 2026
  • References: 21 December 2026
  • Mid-stage notification: 25 January 2027
  • Offers released: 5 March 2027

The date to put first in your diary is 7 December 2026, not 10 December. Miss the course deadline and the scholarship deadline cannot save your application — and if you leave the course application until 7 December itself, the wait for your applicant ID could leave you unable to complete the scholarship application in time. Start in November if you can.

Why this scholarship stands out

Many fully funded PhD opportunities are tied to a single department, a single country partnership, or a narrow research theme. Warwick's competition is different: up to 80 awards, across six streams, open to doctoral applicants in eligible research courses across the university, with full fees and a living stipend. The single-application structure also removes a common frustration — you are considered for every stream you qualify for, rather than having to guess which one to target. For an international researcher with a strong proposal and a clear Warwick fit, this is a serious, well-funded route into UK doctoral study.
