Durham Inspiring Excellence Scholarship 2027: £30,000

Durham University Inspiring Excellence Scholarship 2027 in the UK: Up to £30,000 for International Undergraduates

2026 International Student Financial Guide

Securing a Fully Funded Scholarship is only the first step. Many Nigerian students are now utilizing No-Cosigner Student Loans through providers like MPOWER Financing and Prodigy Finance to cover living expenses in the USA, Canada, and the UK.

Proof of Funds & GRE Waivers

If you are applying to Ivy League or Russell Group Universities, look for programs offering Graduate Assistantships. Many top-tier universities are currently granting GRE and GMAT Waivers for African applicants with strong professional backgrounds or high GPAs from recognized institutions.

WES Evaluation and English Tests

For Canada and the US, a WES Course-by-Course Evaluation is often mandatory. Additionally, if your degree was taught in English, you may qualify for an IELTS/TOEFL Waiver, saving you significant costs during the Graduate Admissions process.

If you are an international student aiming for a world top 100 university in the UK in September 2027, Durham University's Inspiring Excellence Undergraduate Scholarship is well worth your attention. It is a competitive, application-based award that can take £5,000 or £10,000 off your tuition fees every year — up to £15,000 or £30,000 over a three-year degree.

Let us be clear from the start: this is a partial funding award, not a fully funded scholarship. It is a tuition fee discount, paid directly against your fees, with no cash alternative. You will still need a plan for the rest of your tuition and your living costs in Durham. What it does offer is serious, multi-year support for outstanding self-funded international students — and you do not need to hold an academic offer before you apply for the scholarship itself.

What the scholarship offers

- Scholarship: Durham Inspiring Excellence Undergraduate Scholarship 2027

- University: Durham University, Durham, England, UK

- Level: Full-time, in-person undergraduate degree, starting September 2027

- Duration: Up to three years, subject to strong academic progress (see renewal rules below)

- Number of awards: Limited — this is a highly competitive scholarship

Who can apply

Durham states that applicants must:

- Be self-funded and not in receipt of any other scholarship, funding award, or sponsorship from Durham University or any external organisation

- Be classified as Overseas for tuition fee purposes (Home fee status students are not eligible)

- Hold a valid UCAS Personal ID

- Have applied for an eligible full-time, in-person undergraduate programme at Durham University

- Meet or exceed the entry requirements for the programme applied for

- Select Durham University as Firm Choice by the UCAS reply deadline — and not as Insurance Choice

- Commence undergraduate studies at Durham University in September 2027

There are also exclusions to note. The BA (Hons) in Theology, Ministry and Mission and the BA (Hons) in Theology and Religion are excluded from this scheme. Applicants admitted through Clearing, and applicants progressing via the Durham University International Study Centre, are not eligible.

Selection is based on your scholarship application responses, your academic achievements, and your potential to make a positive impact after completing your degree. Nationality diversity and balance across programmes are also considered. Meeting the basic eligibility rules does not guarantee an award.

How to apply

There are two steps, and both matter:

1. Apply for an eligible undergraduate programme at Durham University via UCAS before the equal consideration deadline of 13 January 2027 at 18:00 UK time. You do not need to hold an academic offer at the time you submit the scholarship application, but you must provide a valid UCAS ID on the scholarship form. Applicants who apply after the UCAS equal consideration deadline are advised to submit their scholarship application in the second round.

2. Complete and submit the Durham Inspiring Excellence Undergraduate Scholarship Online Application Form by one of the deadlines below.

If you do not receive an academic offer before the first-round selection deadline, or you are unsuccessful in the first round, you will automatically be considered for the second round. You do not need to submit the scholarship form again.

Important deadlines

- Scholarship applications opened: 1 October 2026

- First-round scholarship deadline: 7 December 2026 at 23:59 GMT — first-round results announced 18 December 2026

- Second-round scholarship deadline: 15 March 2027 at 23:59 GMT — second-round results announced 29 March 2027

- Final-round scholarship deadline: 1 May 2027 at 23:59 GMT — final-round results announced 15 May 2027

- UCAS equal consideration deadline: 13 January 2027 at 18:00 UK time

If you are targeting the earliest decision, aim for the first-round deadline of 7 December 2026. Later rounds are still open, but this is a limited, competitive award, so earlier is stronger.

Renewal — keeping the award for years two and three

The award runs for up to three years, but continuation depends on your academic progress each year:

- Inspiring Excellence £5k: pass all modules and achieve an overall mark of at least 60% each year to continue receiving the award

- Inspiring Excellence £10k: pass all modules and achieve an overall mark of at least 70% each year to continue at £10,000

- If a £10k recipient passes all modules with at least 60% but below 70%, they will receive the £5,000 award in the following year instead

- Recipients who fail to pass all modules, or fall below 60% overall, will not be eligible for the scholarship in the following academic year

For programmes with a placement or study abroad year, the award applies to years one, two and four, not to the placement or study abroad year itself. The award is not transferable and not deferrable — if you defer enrolment, the scholarship offer will be withdrawn. Selected applicants must also respond to the scholarship offer, confirm Durham as Firm Choice by the UCAS reply deadline, meet all academic conditions, and enrol in September 2027.

Why this scholarship stands out

Durham is one of the UK's most historic universities, with its distinctive college system, and this scholarship rewards exactly what its name promises: inspiring academic excellence. Unlike automatic fee discounts, it asks you to make a case for yourself — your achievements and your future impact — and it rewards that case for up to three years, not just your first year.

The trade-off is equally clear: it is partial funding, it cannot be combined with any other scholarship or sponsorship, and it requires Firm Choice commitment to Durham. If Durham is genuinely your first choice and you have the grades to back it up, this is one of the strongest undergraduate scholarship opportunities in the UK for September 2027 entry.
