Sheffield Ncuk Merit Scholarship 2027: Up To £17,500

University of Sheffield NCUK Merit Scholarship 2027 in the UK: Up to £17,500 for NCUK Foundation Year Students

2026 International Student Financial Guide

Securing a Fully Funded Scholarship is only the first step. Many Nigerian students are now utilizing No-Cosigner Student Loans through providers like MPOWER Financing and Prodigy Finance to cover living expenses in the USA, Canada, and the UK.

Proof of Funds & GRE Waivers

If you are applying to Ivy League or Russell Group Universities, look for programs offering Graduate Assistantships. Many top-tier universities are currently granting GRE and GMAT Waivers for African applicants with strong professional backgrounds or high GPAs from recognized institutions.

WES Evaluation and English Tests

For Canada and the US, a WES Course-by-Course Evaluation is often mandatory. Additionally, if your degree was taught in English, you may qualify for an IELTS/TOEFL Waiver, saving you significant costs during the Graduate Admissions process.

Are you finishing an NCUK International Foundation Year and planning to start an undergraduate degree in the UK in September 2027? The University of Sheffield's NCUK Merit Scholarship 2027 could be worth up to £17,500 across your degree — a generous tuition-fee discount that rewards strong academic achievement and initiative.

The University of Sheffield is a leading UK research university, and this competitive scholarship is designed specifically for overseas fee-paying students joining Sheffield from an NCUK International Foundation Year (or NCUK International Year One) in September 2027. It is a different, larger award than Sheffield's automatic International Undergraduate Scholarship — and it is well worth applying for if you are eligible.

What the scholarship offers

  • A scholarship worth up to £17,500 for the duration of your course.
  • A tuition-fee discount of £10,000 in your first year of study.
  • A further £2,500 in each subsequent year, subject to meeting the progression criteria — so a four-year degree could attract £10,000 plus £2,500 a year thereafter.
  • The award is a tuition-fee discount only. There is no cash alternative, and it does not cover living costs, accommodation or travel.
  • In subsequent years, you will receive the University's International Undergraduate Scholarship worth £2,500 per year, provided you score 60% or above (weighted mean grade) and achieve at least 120 credits in the previous academic year. It does not apply during a year in industry, a work placement or a year abroad.
  • The scholarship cannot be combined with any other scholarship or discount offered by the University, or with funding from an external sponsor (a repayable loan is the exception). If you are selected, you are guaranteed the award in your first year only, subject to meeting your offer conditions.

Who can apply

  • You must be currently studying an NCUK International Foundation Year at the point of application, and you must enter a degree programme at the University of Sheffield from an NCUK International Foundation Year or an NCUK International Year One.
  • You must commence an undergraduate degree at the University of Sheffield in September 2027 (autumn 2027). All undergraduate degree courses are included, except Medicine (A100/A101) and Dentistry (A200).
  • You must hold an offer for a course studied in full at the University of Sheffield.
  • You must be self-funded and eligible to pay the overseas tuition fee. Sponsored students are not eligible.
  • You must choose the University of Sheffield as your firm or insurance choice before 4pm (UK time) on Wednesday 2 June 2027.
  • MArch programmes are treated as postgraduate taught programmes for scholarship purposes and are not eligible for this undergraduate award.
  • Students currently at the Sino-British College and Oxbridge Ikeja and Oxbridge Lekki are not eligible for this scholarship.
  • The scholarship cannot be deferred. If you decide to defer entry to another year, you forfeit the award — and if you join Sheffield through Clearing, you will no longer be eligible.

How the selection works

This is a competitive award, and not every application will succeed. A panel of senior staff will select the strongest applications, looking for:

  • Examples of achievements that represent excellence and initiative in educational, voluntary or extra-curricular areas.
  • Evidence of how those achievements relate to the course you have applied for at Sheffield, and to your future ambitions.
  • A strong academic profile.

If you are selected, you will need to confirm acceptance of the scholarship by a fixed date, and accept your course offer by 4pm (UK time) on Wednesday 2 June 2027. The decision of the scholarship panel is final, and no appeals are considered.

How to apply

  1. Apply for an undergraduate degree at the University of Sheffield starting in September 2027 and receive your offer.
  2. Log in to the scholarship application form using your MUSE for applicants login details, which are sent to you shortly after you receive your course offer.
  3. Submit your NCUK Merit Scholarship application before the deadline below.
  4. Choose the University of Sheffield as your firm or insurance choice before 4pm (UK time) on Wednesday 2 June 2027.

Important dates

  • Friday 23 April 2027, 1pm (UK time): deadline to apply for the NCUK Merit Scholarship 2027.
  • Thursday 7 May 2027: successful applicants are notified of the outcome.
  • Wednesday 2 June 2027, before 4pm (UK time): choose the University of Sheffield as your firm or insurance choice.

Why this scholarship stands out

Many international scholarships are automatic, modest discounts. The NCUK Merit Scholarship is different: it is a competitive, merit-based award that puts £10,000 off your first-year tuition fees — four times Sheffield's standard automatic award in year one — and keeps supporting you in later years if you maintain strong grades. If you are already on an NCUK pathway heading to Sheffield, this is one application genuinely worth the effort. It is a partial award, not a full scholarship, so you will still need funding for the rest of your tuition fees and living costs, but £17,500 across a degree is a serious head start.
