Minnesota Global Excellence Scholarship 2027: $20,000

University of Minnesota Global Excellence Scholarship 2027 in the USA: $5,000 to $20,000 a Year for First-Year International Students — No Separate Application — Deadlines 1 December 2026 and 1 January 2027

2026 International Student Financial Guide

Securing a Fully Funded Scholarship is only the first step. Many Nigerian students are now utilizing No-Cosigner Student Loans through providers like MPOWER Financing and Prodigy Finance to cover living expenses in the USA, Canada, and the UK.

Proof of Funds & GRE Waivers

If you are applying to Ivy League or Russell Group Universities, look for programs offering Graduate Assistantships. Many top-tier universities are currently granting GRE and GMAT Waivers for African applicants with strong professional backgrounds or high GPAs from recognized institutions.

WES Evaluation and English Tests

For Canada and the US, a WES Course-by-Course Evaluation is often mandatory. Additionally, if your degree was taught in English, you may qualify for an IELTS/TOEFL Waiver, saving you significant costs during the Graduate Admissions process.

The Global Excellence Scholarship is the headline merit award for international undergraduates at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities in Minneapolis, Minnesota — one of the largest public research universities in the United States. It is a competitive, merit-based scholarship for international freshmen and transfer students, and the best part for applicants is how simple it is to be considered: there is no separate scholarship application. Every international student who applies for admission by the relevant deadline and completes the Certification of Finances Form is automatically considered. For Fall 2027 entry, the first deadline has already passed — Early Action I on 1 November 2026 — but two chances remain: Early Action II on Monday 1 December 2026 and the Regular Deadline on Thursday 1 January 2027.

Key deadlines: submit your complete first-year application by 1 December 2026 (Early Action II) or 1 January 2027 (Regular Decision) to be considered for the Global Excellence Scholarship. Early Action I (1 November 2026) has already passed. Scholarship recipients are notified by 31 March 2027.

What the scholarship offers

As confirmed on the University of Minnesota's official Global Excellence Scholarships page:

  • Freshmen: $5,000 to $20,000 per year, for up to four years — the award is a non-resident tuition waiver applied only toward tuition costs, so the exact amount depends on academic merit
  • Transfer students: $10,000 per year, for up to three years when entering in the fall semester (spring-entry transfers are considered only on a funds-available basis)
  • Automatic consideration — no separate form, essay or interview for the scholarship itself; your admission application is your scholarship application
  • Renewable — the award continues for up to four years for freshmen, provided you maintain your valid non-immigrant visa status and remain enrolled

Be clear about what this covers: the Global Excellence Scholarship is a partial tuition award, not a fully funded scholarship. It applies only to tuition — it does not cover housing, food, books, health insurance or travel. The University's own cost figures make the gap plain: for 2026–27, tuition and fees for an international undergraduate are $44,743, and the total estimated cost of attendance for nine months is $67,085 (tuition and fees $44,743, books and supplies $1,000, mandatory health insurance $3,590, living expenses $17,752). Even the top $20,000 award leaves a large balance, so applicants should plan realistically for family funding or other aid. The University states plainly that it does not offer a full tuition waiver or full scholarship to international students. Tuition for 2027–28 will be finalised by the Board of Regents in July 2027, so expect the figures to rise slightly.

Who is eligible?

To be considered for the Global Excellence Scholarship, you must:

  • Be an international student applying as a freshman or transfer student to the University of Minnesota Twin Cities for Fall 2027, on an F-1 or other non-immigrant visa — you must maintain valid non-immigrant visa status to keep the award
  • Apply for admission by one of the published deadlines — Early Action II (1 December 2026) or Regular Decision (1 January 2027) for freshmen; Early Action I (1 November 2026) has passed
  • Complete the Certification of Finances Form — this is the one extra step the University requires for scholarship consideration, on top of the admission application
  • Show strong academic preparation — the award is competitive and merit-based, so recipients are among the strongest applicants in the pool; meeting the basic requirements does not guarantee an award
  • Not qualify for Minnesota resident or reciprocity tuition — students who qualify for resident rates through Minnesota, Wisconsin, North Dakota or the Canadian province of Manitoba are not eligible for this scholarship

How to apply

  1. Apply for first-year admission to the University of Minnesota Twin Cities via the Common Application by 1 December 2026 (Early Action II) or 1 January 2027 (Regular Decision). A complete freshman application has three parts: the application itself, self-reported courses and grades, and the $55 application fee. ACT/SAT scores are not required through Fall 2027 admission. If English is not your native language, you will need to submit English proficiency test results unless you qualify for an exemption — check the University's English Proficiency page for the exempt countries and accepted tests.
  2. Complete the Certification of Finances Form. This is required for Global Excellence Scholarship consideration, so do not leave it until after the deadline.
  3. Watch for your admission decision. Early Action II applicants receive a decision (admit, defer or deny) in Application Tracker by 28 February 2027; Regular Decision applicants receive a decision (admit, waitlist or deny) by 31 March 2027.
  4. Wait for the scholarship notification. Scholarship recipients and students admitted to the University Honors Program are notified by 31 March 2027.

Key dates for Fall 2027 entry

  • 1 November 2026 (passed): Early Action I application deadline
  • 1 December 2026: Early Action II application deadline — decision by 28 February 2027
  • 1 January 2027: Regular Decision application deadline — decision by 31 March 2027
  • 31 March 2027: Scholarship recipients and Honors Program admissions notified
  • September 2027: Studies begin at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities, Minneapolis

Why this one is worth noting

Most American merit scholarships for international students ask for a separate application, an extra essay, or a nomination. The Global Excellence Scholarship asks for none of that — a single Common Application, plus the Certification of Finances Form, puts you in the running for up to $20,000 a year for four years. The trade-off is honest and worth stating plainly: even the maximum award covers less than half of the international tuition bill, and nothing toward living costs, so this is a strong partial award for a strong student, not a full ride. If you are applying to Minnesota anyway and can fund the balance, it costs you nothing extra to be considered — but do not miss the 1 December Early Action II date if you want the earlier decision, and do not forget the Certification of Finances Form, which is the one step that separates a scholarship candidate from an ordinary applicant.
