Berea College Scholarship 2027: Fully Funded In Usa

Berea College Scholarship 2027 in the USA: Fully Funded Undergraduate Study in Kentucky — No Tuition, Housing, Food and Fees

2026 International Student Financial Guide

Securing a Fully Funded Scholarship is only the first step. Many Nigerian students are now utilizing No-Cosigner Student Loans through providers like MPOWER Financing and Prodigy Finance to cover living expenses in the USA, Canada, and the UK.

Proof of Funds & GRE Waivers

If you are applying to Ivy League or Russell Group Universities, look for programs offering Graduate Assistantships. Many top-tier universities are currently granting GRE and GMAT Waivers for African applicants with strong professional backgrounds or high GPAs from recognized institutions.

WES Evaluation and English Tests

For Canada and the US, a WES Course-by-Course Evaluation is often mandatory. Additionally, if your degree was taught in English, you may qualify for an IELTS/TOEFL Waiver, saving you significant costs during the Graduate Admissions process.

Berea College in Kentucky, USA, is accepting international applications for Fall 2027 entry, and every admitted student is covered by its fully funded, no-loan funding model. From Fall 2027, Berea's Financial Freedom Pledge guarantees 100% of tuition, housing, food and fees, without student loans, for every enrolled student.

This is not a small, separate scholarship competition. At Berea, admission itself carries the funding: there is no separate scholarship application to enter, and no application fee. That makes it one of the most unusual — and most competitive — undergraduate opportunities in the United States for students with strong academics and limited financial resources.

What does the Berea College funding cover?

Under the Financial Freedom Pledge, announced on 27 August 2026 and beginning in Fall 2027, Berea will cover:

  • 100% of tuition
  • On-campus housing
  • Food
  • Required college fees
  • No student loans as part of the funding package

Berea also supports students with books and supplies, a free laptop, its nationally recognised Work College Program, funded internships, study-away opportunities, professional clothing support, conference funding and wellness resources. These are part of Berea's comprehensive investment in its students, not a monthly cash stipend.

Berea has not charged tuition since 1892, and it describes itself as the nation's oldest continuously tuition-free college. It exclusively admits students from limited economic resources, so financial need is central to admission — not an afterthought.

Who can apply?

Berea welcomes international applicants from around the world, but admission is highly competitive. Berea reports enrolling about 40 or fewer new international students each year, from hundreds of applications, so meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee an offer.

In general, applicants should:

  • Have completed, or be completing, secondary education that qualifies them for university admission in their home country
  • Show strong academic performance
  • Demonstrate substantial financial need
  • Submit an accepted English or standardised test result (see below)
  • Submit a personal essay of about 2–5 pages, written entirely by themselves, covering their educational background and life experiences, their plans after college, their reasons for returning or not returning to their home country, and examples of positive contributions to their community
  • Provide one teacher recommendation and a separate Financial Resource Recommendation from someone familiar with their financial circumstances (not a close relative)
  • Complete Berea's own International Financial Questionnaire through the application portal

International applicants are not test-optional. Every international applicant must provide at least one accepted test result. Published minimums commonly listed for Berea's international route are: IELTS Academic 6.0 overall (minimum 5.0 in each component), Duolingo English Test 95, TOEFL iBT 68, TOEFL paper-based 520, SAT 980, or ACT 19, normally taken within the last two years. Check Berea's official international page for the current list before you apply, as test rules can change.

Berea's Work Program is also part of the deal: every student works on campus, at least 10 hours a week. Many international students work around 15–20 hours a week and earn more than $2,000 during the academic year, which can help with personal expenses.

Important costs and limits to understand before you apply

  • No application fee: applying to Berea as an international student is free.
  • Enrolment deposit: admitted international students are normally expected to pay a $2,200 enrolment deposit to confirm their place, before Berea issues the I-20 needed for the US student visa process. Berea states that additional assistance or adjustments may be available for admitted students who cannot afford the full amount — discuss this directly with Berea's admissions office after an offer, rather than assuming the deposit is waived.
  • Travel and personal costs: the pledge covers tuition, housing, food and fees. It does not explicitly promise to pay every student's airfare, visa fee or personal travel expenses, so budget for those separately.
  • Fall entry only: Berea does not admit new international students for the spring semester.
  • Undergraduate only: Berea offers more than 30 Bachelor's majors, but no Master's or PhD programmes.
  • Previous degree holders: students who already hold a Bachelor's degree are not eligible to apply for another undergraduate degree at Berea. International transfer applicants are considered, but limited international places are generally prioritised for students who have not previously had an opportunity to pursue higher education.
  • Incomplete applications will not be considered, and Berea states that deadline extensions are not available for international applicants.

How to apply

There is no separate Berea scholarship form. You apply for admission as an international student, and financial eligibility is assessed as part of that admission process.

  1. Apply online through Berea College's official application portal for international students.
  2. Complete the online application for Fall 2027 entry.
  3. Upload your official secondary-school records (certified English translations where the originals are not in English).
  4. Upload your accepted test report.
  5. Submit your independently written personal essay.
  6. Arrange your teacher recommendation and your Financial Resource Recommendation early.
  7. Complete Berea's International Financial Questionnaire accurately.
  8. Submit everything — all required components — by 30 November 2026. Do not confuse this with Berea's domestic deadlines (1 November, 31 January and 31 March): international applicants use 30 November.

Why this one matters

For a student with talent and ambition but limited family resources, Berea removes the single biggest barrier to a US degree: the bill itself. The trade-off is real — a very small international intake, a firm November deadline, a detailed application, and a campus work commitment — but for Fall 2027, no other US college offers quite the same no-loan, fully funded promise to every enrolled student.

If you intend to start your Bachelor's degree in Fall 2027, prepare now and submit a complete application well before 30 November 2026.
