There are two indegineous Euclea species in Ethiopiarnof a total of nearly 20 species of Euclea in the worldrnall of which are restricted to tropical and subtropicalrnAfrica, Eucl80 schimJ?erU (family Ebenaceae), known inrnAmharic os Dedeho, is used in Ethiopia traditional medicinernfor the treatment of gonorrheae.rnThe extract obtained from the root bark affordedrnseven naphthoquinones and two triterpenes, Five of thernnaphthoquinones are known compounds, these being 7-methyljuglonern(N-i), neodiospyrin (N-2), 2-methylnaphthazarinrn(N-3), mamegokinone (N~4), and isodiospyrin (N-7). Thernother two naphthoquinones have not yet been structurallyrnelucidated, The two triterpenes are lupeol (T-i) andrnunidentified triterpene (T-3),rnThe extract from the stem-bark of g. schimperirnyielded isodiospyrin (N-7), lupeol (T-i), and anotherrnunchar'lcterized triterpene (T-2).rnFrom previous phytochemical reports it appears thatrnout of the known naphthoquinones isolated neodiospyrinrn(N-2) and 2-methylnaphthozarin (N-3) have not been reportedrnbefore from any part of the plant. Furthermore, rnthe occurrence of naodiospyrin (N-2) from the genusrnEuclea is reported here for the first time
