The world's tropical forests are disappearing at alarming rate. With less than 3rnpercent of total land covered by forests, Ethiopia is one of the least developed couriersrnsuffering from the problem of Deforestation. Deforestation impedes agricultural productivityrnand sustainability, exacerbates rural poverty, and affects the whole ecosystem with seriousrnregional and global implications. As a result, improving management of the existing forestrnresources has become the subject of considerable anthemion in many countries.rnProper management of forests requires economic analysis which can be used as arnbasis for land use decisions. To make such analysis which help guide decision making on arnvariety of forest land use options, however, improved valuation is needed. This paper hasrnexamined the application of contingent valuation method for evaluating the opportunity costrnof deforestation in Ethiopia. In doing so, the study also attempted at testing the valuationrnmethod employed. The finding of the study suggests that comingle valuation survey canrnactually measure values that are theoretically consisted and sufficiently reliable and whichrncan be valid for use in benefit-cost analysis.
