Nowadays, along with air and water pollution; noise pollution also hits the public life and creates problems to the normal life. A noise is an unwanted sound with random intensity of signals that bears no information (Encyclopedia Americana). It is generally defined as a ‘sound in the wrong’ place at the ‘wrong time’ that causes general feeling of annoyance and irritation, fatigue and damage to the auditory mechanisms. The school is the most prominent place for learning in modern society. In this environment, pupils and teachers must work together to achieve and provide knowledge in social and educational interplay.rnNoise pollution around the educational area affects the performance of both teachers and students. Little attention has been given by individual or government concerning noise pollution in school’s surrounding. Because many schools are located near busy place such as city, shop, construction, business, residential and traffic area. But school must be located in silent environment. Noise pollution and its influence on environment and life quality of human beings may be considered as a hot topic in scientific research. Since there are no sufficient studies on noise pollution in Ethiopia, this study was carried out to determine noise levels of schools located in different area of Addis Ababa city.rnThis paper reviews research on issues relating to the effects of noise at school. Areas covered include source of noise at school environment; the effects of classroom noise on student's and teacher’s performance; student's and teacher’s annoyance due to noise; and surveys of classroom noise levels. The paper concludes by outlining some current WHO standards for classrooms. Noise measurements were taken in working hour of Monday to Friday. The equivalent sound levels - Leq- were measured at eight schools, between 8a.m and 4p.m. High noise levels on school were observed. Almost in all measurement points, noise values exceeded 35 dB(A), limit value according to WHO standard noise control regulation. Evaluation of various noise descriptors such as L10, L50, L90, Leq, LNP, TNI and NC showed that people of the study schools got suffered from uncomfortable feeling to a position of noise annoyance. The results showed that noise should be mentioned among the major environmental problems and studies aim at preventing it should have great priority.
