The objective of this study is to assess the impact of climate variability on food security within the study area. to realize this objective, essential information was gathered from sample kebeles from three agro-ecological zones by using mixed research design. Both quantitative and qualitative data were collected concurrently. The quantitative data includes long-term climatic data (1974-2019) were used for analysis. Multi-stage sampling techniques were employed to pick appropriate key informants, discussants and sample households. Supported the relevant information gathered, the status of food insecurity is assessed by food insecurity indicators (HFIAS) within the household level. The result of the analysis shows that the rainfall pattern within the study area is extremely concentrated within the five years of the belg and meher season. The spring and autumn rains are found to be determinant factors to agricultural productivity within the study area. Hence, the general results of the study clearly indicates that both rainfall and temperature attributes significantly determine the annual agricultural outputs causing food insecurity in the study area additionally to socioeconomic and technological factors. The Belg rainfall shows insignificantly decreasing trend. Crop yield reduction, shortage of pasture for animals, occurrence of recent disease on crops, humans and animals, shortage of installation, flooding and erosion are the key perceived impacts of global climate change and variability. In response farmers had adopted different coping strategies like; selling fire wood and charcoal, decrease amount of meal, selling of livestock, seasonal migration and borrowing grains from relatives. The study also identified women, children, elders, disables; poor and landless are most liable tothe present effect of global climate change and variability. supported the results, this study suggests the subsequent recommendations to reduce the impacts of climate variability. Empowering peoples with education and knowledge, facilitating access to credit services, train farmers on utilization of inputs, use environmentally sound agricultural production system, use integrated adaptation & mitigation measures, solve the constraint and expand indigenous adaptation strategies.
