This study investigated the Information Support Systemrnavailable for Radio services in Tanzania, and presentedrnpossible ways of strengthening the existing information systemrnand services. The main objective of the work is to develop andrnenhance the efficiency and effectiveness of Radio services inrnthe country by facilitating access t o timely, reliable,rnrelevant, and adequate information to radio servicesrndevelopers, that is, planners, decision makers, executives andrnexperts .rnAmong various aspects which :he study investigated include: therninformation flow pat tern; information resource sharing;rnapplication of information technology , IT ) ; the kind ofrnservices offered by infraction centers; and how the radiornservices developers have benefited by these informationrncentersrnThe results of the survey conducted show that the performancernof information services supporting :he radio servicesrndevelopment in the country are weak. This poor performancernoriginates from ineffective information flow pattern; lack ofrnco - ordination of information centers related to the developmentrnof radio services; inadequacy o f data / information collection,rnprocessing, and dissemination, especially at the Directorate o frnInformation and Broadcasting (DIB ) ; l o w level of application ofrnInformation Technology (IT) in handling and disseminate on ofrninformation ; inadequacy of trained personnel; and absence ofrncomputer-based information servicesrnIn order to overcome the shortcomings mentioned above , thernestablishment o f computer-based information support system isrnproposed, its features elaborated and a plan for itsrnimplementation suggested.rnThe proposed Information Support System for Radio Services, therncore of this study, outlines the ISSRS establishment, itsrnmanagement structure, functions, facilities to be used andrnbudget considerations. The main ISSRS function will be tornstrengthen and enhance provision of information services wit hrnemphasis on value-added information products. Appropriaterninformation infrastructure components are identified and theirrndevelopment recommended to ensure efficient execution of ISSRSrnactivities.rnrnThe recommendations made following this study include: thernestablishment of National Policy on Information Systems andrnServices to direct information services in the country; userrnstudies to identify the sect oral needs; training of workers andrnattracting /encouraging the available experts ; reasonablernattention to be given by the government to information as anrnimportant resource for development; strengthening co-ordinationrnamong the institutions related to radio services development;rnimprovement of IT application in the radio broadcasting sector ;rnand establishment of the National Information System to co -rnordinate thernsuggestions arerncapacity andrninformation services in Tanzania . Thesernexpected to improve the information systemsrncapabilities in supporting radio servicesrndevelopment in the country .
