Background:-Physiological range of clinically important hematological and lipid status ofrnhealthy population in Ethiopia is not well assessed.rnObjective:-the objective of this study is to determine and standardize hematologic and lipidrnparameters of healthy blood donors at Addis Ababa. This will enable us to know hematologicalrnparameters of healthy population are within a reference range used in clinical practice. This givesrnan insight towards further setting a reference value to Ethiopian population in the future.rnMethodology:- Red Cross Society located in Addis Ababa was selected as a study area. A total ofrn336 subjects (both males and females, with age range between 18-58 years) participated in thisrnstudy. Study participants were selected by convenient sampling method and cross-sectional studyrndesign was applied. Venous blood sample was collected by tube containing K3 EDTArnanticoagulant for hematology test and sterile tube without anticoagulant for lipid test. Afterrncentrifugation serum was extracted for lipid test and transported to SHMMCL within 5-8hrs ofrnsample collection. IBM.SPSS version 21 statistical software was used for data analysis, P< 0.05 isrnassumed as significant and 95% CL was accepted.rnResult:-Significant variation in hematological and lipid parameters of Ethiopian healthy adults asrncompared with reference range was observed in this study. RBC, MCV, Platelet and TG werernsignificantly higher in the present study than the reference range; while RBC indices,WBC, Hgb,rnHct, HDL, LDL and TC were found to be higher in reference range used in clinical practice; sincern|Calculated-t| > | t-tabulated | value. Significantly higher RBC and lower MCV was found inrnphysically active participants than sedentary subjects (P=0.03 and P=0.01 respectively).rnSignificantly higher TC and LDL was observed in subject who have previous history of bloodrndonation as compared with those without previous history of blood donation (p= 0.002 and p=rn0.003 respectively)rnConclusionrnIt is evident from this study that our participants have shown significant variation inrnhematological and lipid variables from established one’srnKeyword: Hematology Profile, Lipid Profile Normal Values, Addis Ababa
