Unmet Psyhosocial Needs Of Women Diagnosed With Breast Cancer Undergoing Oncology Treatment In Addis Ababa University College Of Health Science Oncology Center.
This study explored the unmet psychosocial needs of women diagnosed with breast cancerrnundergoing treatment in Addis Ababa University College of Health Science Oncology Centerrnand their existing coping strategy. Qualitative design was used, taking a descriptivernphenomenological approach. Nine participants from different socioeconomic backgrounds andrnage range, who were receiving different treatment modalities, were purposively selected andrninterviewed individually. The data were analyzed using thematic analysis. Four themes emerged;rnPreparation and readiness for treatment, Psychosocial difficulties, Emotional experience,rnCoping and Social support. The results indicate that the needs of women for information alongrnwith understanding from others, was not fully met. This in turn affected their psychologicalrnreadiness for treatment and related challenges. Other than the information needed, they lackedrnadequate psychological support to help them to face all the challenges and emotional difficultiesrnwhich resulted due to their illness and the treatment process. To cope with all the challenges andrnunpleasant emotional experiences faith, acceptance, optimism and social support were therncoping mechanisms reported. Based on the findings It is recommended that further work is donernto improve information and psychosocial support provided to women undergoing treatment forrnbreast cancer, building on their existing coping and strengths.
