Background: - Patients have the right to expect Quality of care. Patient satisfaction withrnnursing care is considered an important factor in explaining patients' perceptions of servicernquality. Care assessed to be high quality according to clinical, economic or other provider-definedrncriteria is far from ideal if as a result of that care the patient is unhappy or dissatisfied. There is,rnthen, a sound rationale for making the organization and delivery of health care responsive tornconsumer opinion.rnObjective: -The objective of this study is to assess quality of nursing care as indicated byrnpatients’ satisfaction.rnMethods: - A Cross-Sectional Survey was conducted at Public Hospitals in Addis Ababa,rnnamely Tikur Anbessa, Saint Paul and Zewditu Memorial Hospitals from July, 2004 to April,rn2005. The study population was adult patients who were admitted into the medical, surgicalrnand gynecological wards of study Hospitals for at least two nights. The data collection toolrnwas a modified ‘Newcastle Satisfaction with Nursing Scale’ (NSNS). Data analysis wasrncomputed by SPSS. Ethical clearance was secured from Addis Ababa University, Medicalrnfaculty and from the study Hospitals. Participation in this study was voluntary and based onrnpatient’s ability to give informed consent.rnResult: - A total of 660 adult patients from medical, surgical and gynecological wards werernapproached from the study hospitals and 631 of them participated in this study (Non-responsernii irnrate was 4.4%).Participants who were females, age group 41 – 50 years of old, having lowrnincome, less educated, patients who were admitted in third classes, and have no history ofrnprevious admission were more satisfied. The over all rating of satisfaction was 67%.The toprnaspects that patients scored highest for their satisfaction with nursing care were the amount ofrnfreedom given, nurses capability in their work and nurses treatment of patients as anrnindividual. The aspects with which patients were least satisfied were the amount and type ofrninformation they received regarding their condition and treatment and also the amountrnnurses knew about patients’ care.
