This study has discussed about the traditional and social institutions’ implication in urbanrnrenewal and development projects on relocated residents. The focus of this study was to explorernthe situations of social institutions such as idir iqub, mahiber, sebekagubaie, and neighborhoodrnself-help group of those who were relocated. Also, it focuses to explore the activities of thosernrelocated including how they are vulnerable to urban context, to examine whether the socialrninstitutions are employed by them to cope-up or recover from the undesirable social problemsrnand to assess the outcomes of such strategies.rnIn doing this, those people who were relocated to Summit, Jemo1 and Jemo2 were purposefullyrnselected as study population. In this context, the implication for social institution of negativerneffects of urban development projects on relocated people. Such relocation caused byrndevelopment project occurs because of slum demolishing, urban expansion and renewal of therncity’s facility and infrastructure.rnThe study was conducted in Arada Sub-city, Basha Woldechilot 1 and 2 project sites in whichrndifferent development projects and relocation programs have been implemented. The overall aimrnof the study was to explore why relocation has been affecting social institutions of the relocatedrnpeople and, the limited emphasize and concern for them by the urban administration responsiblernfor promotion of developmental projects.rnInterviews and questionnaires are used for collection of data. Out of 2659 households relocatedrnfrom Arada Sub-City Basha Woldechilot 1 and2rnto Ayat/Summit and Jemo 1and2 sites 55rnhouseholds were selected using purposive sampling method and tables are used to analyzernsurvey results.rnFinally, the study suggests the importance of community participation in decision-makingrnprocess, through recognizing the establishment of the social institutions that are the backbonernfor community problem solving mechanisms. Before planning projects, deep community basedrnresearch and social institutions participation should be employed during the implementation ofrnthe scheme.
