Background Modern contraceptive methods are the prominent fertility regulation strategiesrnthat play crucial role in reducing maternal, infant and child mortalities. They contribute a lot inrnpoverty reduction and have substantial impact on social, economic, political, and environmentalrnissues.rnObjective: To assess factors influencing use of modern contraceptive methods among currentlyrnmarried women.rnMethod: Unmatched case control study was conducted from January to February 2010 inrnDalle Woreda SNNPR, Ethiopia. The cases were currently married women who were registeredrnby one of the health facilities in the study area and currently using modern contraceptive and therncontrols were currently married women who had visited one of the health facilities in the studyrnarea for reasons other than family planning and have not ever used modern contraception prior tornthe start of data collection.rnResult: A total of 283 contraceptive users and 283 non-users were interviewed. Among thernvariables analyzed, respondents’ age and age at first marriage did not show association withrnmodern contraception practice. Couples who openly discuss about family planning (AOR 3.48rn95% CI =1.77, 6.86) and decide to use modern contraceptive method (AOR 5.58, 95% CI =1.82,rn17.11) were more likely to practice modern contraception.rnWolayta ethnic group and catholic and other religion were less likely to practice modernrncontraceptives (AOR 0.26, 95 % CI= 0.12, 0.57, (AOR 0.23, 0.07, 0.72) respectively.rnConclusion: Women empowerment through education and employment, awareness creationrnthrough IEC and especially using mass media message were recommended to increase modernrncontraceptive utilization.
