Current trends in the field of health promotion emphasize community-based programsrnemploying multiple interventions as the main strategies for achieving population-level changernin risk behaviors and health. It may be difficult to find the individual who would be friendlyrnconcerned about the welfare of the other, uninterested in money, and hard working respectingrnand willing to visit any who ask her/him.rnThe purpose of this study was to evaluate child survival program interventions with specialrnfocus on community health promotion initiatives and to assess determinants of communityrnhealth promoters’ functionality in SNNRP, two Woredas of Gamogofa Zone and AlabarnSpecial WoredarnA comparative cross-sectional study was used to compare functioning CHP withrnnonfunctional CHP in study areas. The study was a census survey, thus the study populationrnwere all the CHPs trained in the study area in 2003 (n=443). In addition, 2 focus grouprndiscussions were held in each study woreda and in-depth interviews were made with keyrninformants in the study areas. Epi-Info and SPSS software were used for data entry andrnanalysis to reveal the finding. The finding revealed that 88.3% of interviewed communityrnhealth promoters were performing 50% or more of the activities mentioned in their jobrndescription. Eleven point seven percent of the community health promoters were found to bernperforming no activities at the time of interview .i.e a point prevalence attrition rate of 11.7%rnover 2 years in the study areas. According to the community response, community healthrnpromoters were very good health teachers,” Increased ITN utilization, toilet use, hand washrnpractice after toilet, and improved household hygiene, were the major appreciable changernobserved following the introduction of CHPs”.rnThe finding could help the health planners who are interested to improve community basedrnhealth interventions as to address the primary health care services through communityrninvolvement and responsibility for health.
