With increase in urbanization, the issue of SWM has become one of thernserious concerns in the cities of developing countries. Kirkos sub city playsrnkey role as an important national and continental center by hosting manyrnkey international.., and national institutions and giant hotels. However, itrnconfronts the challenges of in appropriate dumping of solid wastes, lowerrncapacity to provide SW collection and transportation service. This poorrnSWM system in the sub city negatively affects health, aesthetic values, asrnwell as reputation of the sub city in particular and the city in general.rnThe main objective of this study is to investigate the SWM practices inrnKirkos sub city, with a special emphasis On assessing level of keyrnstakeholders' participation. It is hoped that the study contributes tornimprovement in SWM system of the sub city. The study is based onrnprimary awl. secondary data collected from 104 hr "households, 13 sanitationrnMSEs, Idirs and relevant public offices.rnIn Kirkos sub city poor SWM system is manifested by low solid wasterncollection and transportation frequency; dumping of solid waste everyrnwhere, over flown ,garbage collection containers, and low practice of solidrnwaste reduction, and separation at source. Causes of poor SWM in the subrncity includes shortage of finance to provide necessary materials for solidrnwaste management like dust bins, containers, and vehicles used forrntransportation; lower human resource capacity in responsible publicrnoffices; lack of awareness as well as lower level of participation by keyrnstakeholders. Contribution of all stakeholders in the activity of solid wasternmanagement has potential of solving the above challenges. However thisrnstudy found that except some beginnings with micro and small enterprisesrnonly in some aspects of solid waste management, contribution by otherrnstakeholders in the sub city by small and medium enterprises, NOOs, andrnCBOs is limited.rnIn conclusion it is recommended that NOOs and other communityrnorganizations have to be mobilized to cover the gaps in awareness,rnfinance, and needs for research and new techniques and technology ofrnSWM. The existing institutional arrangements also need to be revised inrnsuch a way to practically bring a system of better participation,rnaccountability, efficiency and effectiveness in the ultimate pursuit clean,rnhealthy and attractive Addis Ababa.
