Cast-in-situ is the conventional method of culvert construction which is frequently used in Ethiopia. It encompass a series of construction activities that includes site preparation works, building falsework and formwork in the shape of the member being built, placing reinforcement bar, concrete batching, mixing, transporting, placing and compacting, and curing. All these interdependent activities are time demanding, challenging to conduct quality control measurement and testing, labor intensive, prone to mistakes, reworks, unplanned situations, and material wastages. This study aims to compare this construction approach with precast method based on time performance, quality performance, cost performance, and safety criterion.rnTo clarify the difference and similarity of these two construction approaches, the design and construction methodologies of precast and cast-in-situ box and slab culverts are discussed briefly. Factors that influences the performance of both methods with respect to construction time, quality of structures, cost of construction and safety are discussed and comparisons are made.rnThis comparison shows that precast construction method have superior time performance, provides high quality product, reduce the construction cost and have high health and safety record.
