Thernpost-1979 period has seen a great increase in thernproduction of Amharic short stories. These stories treat a widernvariety of themes and give an insight into the values, attitudes,rnfears, etc. of our society. However, the dominant concerns of thernstories have not been studied and brought to light by researchers.rnThis research examines the themes in contemporary Amharic shortrnstory anthologies.rnThe main purpose of the thesis is to make a thematic study ofrnpost-1979 Amharic short stories and provide the reading public withrnan insight into the traits, values and life styles that thernEthiopian short stories intend to promote or deter.rnThe study comprises three chapters . The first chapter gives arnmodest account of the Ethiopian short story and explains thernpurpose of the research. The second chapter is devoted to therndiscussion of basic themes. The themes have been studied inrnrelation with their causes and implications on social life. Thernvariety of themes reflected in the stories under study have beenrnclassified into five major groups. The last chapter summarizes thernfindings of the research.
