Simon Fraser University International Undergraduate Scholars Entrance Scholarship 2027 in Canada: CAD 140,000 for First-Year International Students
Securing a Fully Funded Scholarship is only the first step. Many Nigerian students are now utilizing No-Cosigner Student Loans through providers like MPOWER Financing and Prodigy Finance to cover living expenses in the USA, Canada, and the UK.
If you are applying to Ivy League or Russell Group Universities, look for programs offering Graduate Assistantships. Many top-tier universities are currently granting GRE and GMAT Waivers for African applicants with strong professional backgrounds or high GPAs from recognized institutions.
For Canada and the US, a WES Course-by-Course Evaluation is often mandatory. Additionally, if your degree was taught in English, you may qualify for an IELTS/TOEFL Waiver, saving you significant costs during the Graduate Admissions process.
Applications are now open for Simon Fraser University's International Undergraduate Scholars Entrance Scholarship for Fall 2027 entry — a CAD 140,000 award for outstanding international students starting an undergraduate degree at Simon Fraser University (SFU) in British Columbia, Canada. It is one of the largest entrance scholarships SFU offers to international students, paid in eight instalments of CAD 17,500 across four years of study.
This is a partial funding award, not a fully funded scholarship in the sense of covering every cost: it is a major contribution towards tuition and study costs over four years, and in limited cases SFU says an additional living allowance of up to CAD 8,000 per term may also be offered to exceptionally talented students with demonstrated financial need. Treat that extra allowance as possible, not guaranteed.
What the scholarship offers
According to SFU's official Undergraduate Scholars Entrance Scholarships (USES) page, international students who submit one complete application are considered for:
- International Undergraduate Scholars Entrance Scholarship: CAD 140,000, paid as 8 x CAD 17,500
- Residence offer priority for the duration of the entrance scholarship, for students who applied to residence
- 'Front of the line' course enrolment priority for the duration of the entrance scholarship
The same single USES application also puts you in the running for SFU's other entrance scholarships where you meet their criteria, but the CAD 140,000 international award is the flagship value for international applicants.
Who can apply? Eligibility requirements
SFU says you are encouraged to apply for USES if you:
- Are applying to SFU for the Fall term (Fall 2027 entry)
- Are graduating from high school in the year of admission to SFU, or graduated from high school in the previous year and have not enrolled in any post-secondary courses
- Have a minimum average of 90% or 31 IB points (excluding bonus points) in the courses required for admission to your primary programme
- Demonstrate excellence in both academic and extracurricular activities
- Have two complete references, due by 31 January 2027
- Complete all required items on your Student Centre To-Do List so your SFU admission application status shows as "Complete", also by 31 January 2027
Applicants who are not eligible for admission to their primary programme will not be considered for the USES competition, so your academic average must hold up for the programme you choose, not just in general.
How to apply
You must apply to SFU first, because you need your SFU student number to access the scholarship application. Then:
1. Apply for undergraduate admission to SFU for Fall 2027, and get your SFU student number.
2. Complete the USES application by 15 December 2026 at 11:59 p.m. Pacific Time. You will list and reflect on up to 5 extracurricular activities and achievements, including volunteer work, employment, athletics, arts or other personal achievements, plus any awards you have received.
3. Write a short essay of 500 words describing how your personal experiences shaped your outlook on life and how this connects to your future at SFU.
4. Provide contact details for two referees: an academic reference (a high school teacher, counsellor, principal or IB coordinator who best knows your academic ability) and a community involvement and achievements reference (someone in a supervisory role who can comment on at least one of the extracurricular activities you listed — this cannot be a peer or a family member). SFU contacts referees directly by email once you submit; they complete an online reference form and are not required to submit documents.
5. Complete the optional Additional Information section if you wish to describe your financial circumstances.
6. Complete every item on your Student Centre To-Do List and make sure both references are complete by 31 January 2027.
A useful bonus for business applicants: if your USES application meets the minimum requirements to be considered, you are not required to submit the separate Supplemental Application for admission to the Beedie School of Business — your USES application is reviewed in lieu of it, as well as for the scholarship competition. All components, including references, must be complete for this to apply.
Deadlines — do not miss the two-stage timeline
- USES application opens: 1 October 2026
- Deadline to apply for SFU USES: 15 December 2026 at 11:59 p.m. Pacific Time
- Supporting documentation deadline (references and all admission items on the To-Do List): 31 January 2027 at 11:59 p.m. Pacific Time
- Applications reviewed and evaluated: February to March 2027
- USES winners announced: mid-March to May 2027
The December deadline is the scholarship application itself; the January deadline is for the supporting documents that complete it. Missing either stage can cost you the award, so ask your referees early and give them plenty of time before 31 January.
Why this scholarship stands out
Many entrance awards are a one-off payment in first year. SFU's international USES award runs for four years, at CAD 17,500 per term for eight terms, and it comes with practical perks that matter day to day — residence offer priority and priority course enrolment for the duration of the scholarship. For a high-achieving international student with a strong record outside the classroom as well as inside it, and who can show that record clearly in a 500-word essay and two strong references, this is one of the most valuable undergraduate entrance competitions in Canada for Fall 2027.
