Securing a Fully Funded Scholarship is only the first step. Many Nigerian students are now utilizing No-Cosigner Student Loans through providers like MPOWER Financing and Prodigy Finance to cover living expenses in the USA, Canada, and the UK.
If you are applying to Ivy League or Russell Group Universities, look for programs offering Graduate Assistantships. Many top-tier universities are currently granting GRE and GMAT Waivers for African applicants with strong professional backgrounds or high GPAs from recognized institutions.
For Canada and the US, a WES Course-by-Course Evaluation is often mandatory. Additionally, if your degree was taught in English, you may qualify for an IELTS/TOEFL Waiver, saving you significant costs during the Graduate Admissions process.
Berea College in Kentucky, USA, is accepting international applications for Fall 2027 entry, and every admitted student is covered by its fully funded, no-loan funding model. From Fall 2027, Berea's Financial Freedom Pledge guarantees 100% of tuition, housing, food and fees, without student loans, for every enrolled student.
This is not a small, separate scholarship competition. At Berea, admission itself carries the funding: there is no separate scholarship application to enter, and no application fee. That makes it one of the most unusual — and most competitive — undergraduate opportunities in the United States for students with strong academics and limited financial resources.
Under the Financial Freedom Pledge, announced on 27 August 2026 and beginning in Fall 2027, Berea will cover:
Berea also supports students with books and supplies, a free laptop, its nationally recognised Work College Program, funded internships, study-away opportunities, professional clothing support, conference funding and wellness resources. These are part of Berea's comprehensive investment in its students, not a monthly cash stipend.
Berea has not charged tuition since 1892, and it describes itself as the nation's oldest continuously tuition-free college. It exclusively admits students from limited economic resources, so financial need is central to admission — not an afterthought.
Berea welcomes international applicants from around the world, but admission is highly competitive. Berea reports enrolling about 40 or fewer new international students each year, from hundreds of applications, so meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee an offer.
In general, applicants should:
International applicants are not test-optional. Every international applicant must provide at least one accepted test result. Published minimums commonly listed for Berea's international route are: IELTS Academic 6.0 overall (minimum 5.0 in each component), Duolingo English Test 95, TOEFL iBT 68, TOEFL paper-based 520, SAT 980, or ACT 19, normally taken within the last two years. Check Berea's official international page for the current list before you apply, as test rules can change.
Berea's Work Program is also part of the deal: every student works on campus, at least 10 hours a week. Many international students work around 15–20 hours a week and earn more than $2,000 during the academic year, which can help with personal expenses.
There is no separate Berea scholarship form. You apply for admission as an international student, and financial eligibility is assessed as part of that admission process.
For a student with talent and ambition but limited family resources, Berea removes the single biggest barrier to a US degree: the bill itself. The trade-off is real — a very small international intake, a firm November deadline, a detailed application, and a campus work commitment — but for Fall 2027, no other US college offers quite the same no-loan, fully funded promise to every enrolled student.
If you intend to start your Bachelor's degree in Fall 2027, prepare now and submit a complete application well before 30 November 2026.
