THE ROLE OF EFFECTIVE LEADERSHIP IN THE ACHIEVEMENT OF ORGANIZATIONAL GOALS; (A CASE STUDY OF THE INSTITUTE OF MANAGEMENT AND TECHNOLOGY, IMT ENUGU)

 

ABSTRACT

This research work was on a study of the roles of effective leadership in the achievement of organizational goals especially in the institution of management and technology, Enugu. The research work also looked at the roles played by the effective leadership in the achievement of IMT goals. Both primary and secondary data were collected to solve the research problem. The population of study was comprised the IMT management and staff/personnel. The research instruments used for data collected were both primary and secondary data ie questionnaires, interview and personal observations. Tables and percentages were used in presentation and analysis of data collected. Based on the data analysis, the researcher came up with the following findings, it was observed that social, political and economic factors were responsible for the inability of most effective leadership towards achieving organizational goals. It was observed that the role of effective leadership has succeeded in eradicating low quality standard of education and other social ill. Arresting the institution such as cultism etc. The study also revealed that the roles of effective leadership are not very effective and efficient in the achievement of organizational goals. Based on the above findings, recommendations were made among which is that adequate incentives package should be provided by the government for the best leaders in our institutions/organizations for his or her excellence in the  discharge of his or her duties and in achieving the institutional goals.

INTRODUCTION

1.1      BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

An effective leadership has been widely acknowledge as a potential instrument for achieving organization goal and objectives especially in the institute of management and technology (IMT) Enugu.

Leadership is an important aspect of managing the abiding to lead effectively is one of the keys to be an effective manager.

The essence of leadership is follower ship. In other words, it is the willingness of people to follow those whom they perceive as providing means of achieving their own desires, wants or needs. That is why any organizations that desire to achieve their objectives must have an effective and efficient leadership who knows how to apply all the management principles towards achieving their organization goals.

The leader must have the zeal, he must be one who is willing to work with zeal and confidence zeal here reflects having strong feeling, earnestness and intensity in the execution of work and confidence reflects experience and technical ability. To lead is to guide, conduct, direct etc. others to do what they want towards achieving organizational goals.

Leaders should not be people who do not stand behind a group or organization to push and to fore to do something, but leaders should act to help a group achieve objectives with the maximum application of it’s capabilities.

This is kind of leadership we desire to have in our institution, especially in the institute of management and technology.

Furthermore, it should be noted that any organization without an effective and efficient leadership is like driving a car without a head lamp in the might. This
