The main objective of this study was to examine accident relatedrnpsychological problems of children at three selected hospitals in AddisrnAbaba. The study also aimed at finding if there are age, sex and accidentrntype differences in exposure to the ps ychological problems(Anxiety,rnEmotional Distress and Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Symptom Score}.rnInvestigation of the p s y chological services in the three hospitals was alsornanother objective. To meet these objectives, 100 victimed children, 100 'rnparents of children participants and 20 health professionals werernpurposively selected and included in the sample. Three scales measuringrnthe psychological problems (anxiety, emotional distress and posttraumaticrnstress disorder symptoms) and two stru ctured interviews were used asrninstruments.rnQuantitative and qualitative analyses were used to analyze the datarnobtained through the scales and interviews. Percentage results showedrnthat 75% victimed children s howed clinically s ignificant level of anxietyrnwhile 98% had clinically significant level of emotional distress. Se vere .rnposttraumatic stress symptom was exhibited in 61 % of the cases. Resultsrnfrom the analysis of variance indicated that there were no statisticallyrnsignificant age, sex and accident type differences in experiencing anxiety,rnemotional distress and posttraumatic stress disorder symptom levels. Thernmain and interaction effects of the three way ANOVA also came up withrnstatistically non significant results. Interview results with healthrnprofessionals and parents of participants s howed the absence ofrncounseling services In the three hospitals. Recommendations andrnimplications of the study are indicated
