In an attempt to ease the burden and responsibility and achieve the best, the municipality is convinced by therninvolvement of private sector. For the same purpose, a new Agency had established since 2003. Moreover, policyrnand proclamation on the subject matter had endorsed at city and federal government level. And (or theirrnimplementation, especially at city {evel, the Agency had prepared regulation and different manuals. The Agencyrnfurther decentralized its duties and mandate to the kebe/e level. In response to these measures, a number ofrncooperatives and private MSEs starled operating on door·to·door municipal solid waste collection activity.rnTo identify the salient features of door-la-door municipal solid waste collection scheme, and most importanlly torninvestigate the possible challenges seen and opportunities accrued due to the involvement of cooperatives andrnprivate M~Es, the researcher colfected primary and secondary data from the respective sources. Questionnaire,rnunstructured interviews, observation checklists, and different documents were used as data co/fection instrument.rnTo this end narration was used to interpret the data.rnOespite both the cooperatives and private MSEs faced similar challenges in the business, they were a bitrndistinctive. Absences of vehicles, for instance, were· seen the toughest challenges to stay in the business.rnHowever, private MSEs are able to absorb the above shock at least by traveling the longest distance. Lack ofrnacknowledgement and respect a/so discouraged workers due to negative attitude towards them. Inadequate userrnparticipation, Poor health and safety condition, and lack of designated transfer points were also of widerrnimplications on the cooperatives and private MSEs. Moreover, capacity problem, lack of motivation andrnunderstanding also lag their performance.rnThe involvement of cooperatives and private MSEs in door-lo-door municipal solid waste collection contributed 8rnlot to the workers, municipality, and the clients at large. For instance, their engagement in the business attested tornreduce the problem of unemployment and hence alleviating poverty. The municipality also admitted for the meritsrncultivated as a result of private MSEs and cooperatives participation in door-to-door municipal solid wasterncollection scheme. Oespite the municipality did not calculate yet, it was found their contribution in reducing thernmunicipal workers' load and up-scaling the performance. The ultimate beneficiaries also agreed that theirrncompound and area gets relatively cleaner than the municipality was the sale provider of the service.rnTherefore, some of the challenges which were faced by the cooperatives and private MSEs should get solutionrnbefore environmental, health and socia-economic disruptions may happen.
