The Documentation and Information Centre (OIC) was set uprnin 1978 as part of the National Centre for Research inrnKhartoum, Sudan, to support research, development planning,rndecision making and projects monitoring and evaluation. Forrnthe efficient and effective discharge of its functions andrnresponsibilities. OIC has developed a library and informationrncentre and has been p r oviding a variety of informationrnproducts and services. This study aims to evaluate thernproducts and services of OIC, mainly the databases,rnabstracting services, and the inventories and resource sharingrnactivities. The study attempts to identify through systemsrnanalysis , surveys and discussions, factors affecting thernutilization of Ole products and services. Following a briefrngeneral description of the geographical, political andrneconomic features, natural resources , research andrndevelopment, information infrastructure and its inadequaciesrnare detai:.ed. User evaluation shows that OIC products andrnservices are generally of a high quality in contents but needsrnimprovement of the printing and get up. The informationrnproducts are found useful to build up information sources andrnin identifying of grey literature. Users' preferences in termsrnof services was as follows: literature search (22.29%),rnArticle photocopy (18.60 %), bibliographies (15.12%), SOl(10.49%), fiche copy and paper (9.30%). Useful suggestionsrnhave been received from users and information scientists whichrnwould help improve the services.rnvarious factors affecting the smooth operation of DIC arerndiscussed and suggestions are given for developing an integratedrnmanagement information system to support decisionrnmaking, research and development. Further recommends that DICrnshould assume responsibilities as the central body forrncoordinating information services and activities in Sudan.rn-
