This study deals with two varieties of Amharic, namely Gojjam andrnAddis Ababa, in the form of comparison. Its main objective is torndescribe the peculiar linguistic features of Gojjam Amharicatrnphonological, morpho-syntactic and lexical level. To accomplish thisrnstudy, introspection, informant interview and text analysis were used asrndata collection methods. Regarding the phonological aspect,rnstrengtheningof consonants, the change of h to k or its deletion,rninsertion of n, palatalization of velar obstruents, and metathesis werernobserved in Gojjam Amharic. With regard to morpho-syntax, converb,rnformation of relative verbs, nominal plural marking,rnprogressive/continuous constructions, the marker of indirect objects,rnand the form of certain prepositions and conjunctions display variationrnbetween Addis Ababa and Gojjam Amharic. Furthermore, the tworndialects vary in their lexicon, especially in the nominal domain.
