This th esis exami nes th e stru c ture of negat ion in Afan Oromo. T here are morphological andrnlexical negatio ns in th e language. The morphologica l negation is used with finite verbs and thernlexical negat io n is used with n on -finite verb s and nominals.rnThe verbal negative mark e rs are used in perfective and imperfective clauses. In perfectivernclauses, hill -11- mark nega ti on, a nd in impe rfecti ve clauses, hin -u- mark negation. In copularrnclauses, th e fo rm miti is used to mark negation. In no minals, the form malee is used to markrnnegation.rnThere a re also inh ere ntl y nega tive verbs in th e lang uage w hi c h m ay occur with thernm orph o logical negative marker and render a ffi rmat ive re ad in g .
