INTRODUCTION
1.1 BACKGROUND OF STUDY
It is a well-known fact that there is need for a information of among members of the society, irrespective of their class. This study, aims at examining the effects of communication on the performance of student secretaries in IMT
The IMT (Institute of Management and Technology, Enugu) officially recognized in 1973 IMT comprises of seven schools. Among these schools is the school of business studies. The school of business studies has six different departments namely: Cooperative Economic, Business Administration and management, Purchasing and supply, Marketing and Secretarial Administration.
Secretarial studies department is an old as the institution itself. The objectives of this noble department is to produce graduates who can effective and efficiently communicate. Those who would be able to represent their organizations very well. In view of this, the department regards teaching of effective communication skills to its students as obligation that must be achieved, and as such, courses like “Principle and practice of communication in Administration and Business” as well “Communication in English” are taught in the department from ND to HND levels.
Communication – as a subject that is an old as man, has grown into broad, interdisciplinary field of study. From the mere cry of the new born baby to the sophisticated computer, the internet and orbit satellites, communication has turned the entire world into a global village. Good communication therefore, leads to intelligent participation in matters of public concern and this in turn is the stepping stone towards greater efficiency.
To a secretary, especially communication is an indispensable tool. Relaying of information ideas and attitudes between individuals and groups in an organization through oral speech, the use of errorless letters, memoranda, telephones calls, fax machines, computer systems, word processing etc. within and outside the organization is the basic responsibility of a secretary. So mastery and efficient use of its communication must be grasped by students secretaries.
