In construction work, many of the accidents and hazards are obvious. Meanwhile, the rate ofrnserious injuries and fatalities in the construction sites has been increasing as the industry isrngrowing tremendously. The construction site workers are also forced to go workplace despite thernexistence of obvious COVID-19 threat due to the nature of the work where physical distancing inrnalmost impossible for most daily labors. Therefore, the objective of this research is to assessrnsafety management practice in Addis Ababa City building construction projects which arernconstructed by grade I contractors. The study focuses in identifying the root cause of accident,rnfrequently occurring accidents and the safety measures taken for prevention of COVID-19rnpandemic in construction sites. The approach used for the research was a survey researchrnwhich utilized a questionnaire as a means of obtaining primary data. In this research a total ofrn51 questionnaires were distributed to grade I building and general contracts and 46 responsesrnwere collected for analysis. The contractors are found in sic sub city of Addis Ababa. Therncollected data was analyzed quantitatively using descriptive statics method in Microsoft Excel-rn13 spreadsheet. Overall, the finding of the study revealed that most of the contractors have poorrnstatus in implementing safety management system and they are not well organized in consideringrnthe effect of COVID-19 pandemic in their safety management list. Based on the responsesrnobtained from the contractors, the root causes of accident in construction site are Carelessnessrn/Ignorance and Poor working conditions where most accidents are fallings from scaffolds,rnladders, working heights during the Finishing works like plastering, painting.
