HIY / AfDS has become the serious health, economic, social and in general development problemrnworldwide. The epid emic is unique in its coverage of people from al l racial groups, languages,rngenders, econo mi c and academic status and the like.rnMost past studies and researches in Ethiopia regarding the epidemic focused on awareness ofrnpeople towards HIY, knowledge about condom di stribution, pattern of condom distribution,rnknowledge of sexual behavior on HIY/ AfDS and Sexually Transmitted Diseases, sexual violencernand some re lated areas. But, to institute meaningful preventive measures for the control ofrnHIY/AIDS, in addition to what have been done so far, there is a need to address the diversity ofrnep idem ics and make the prevention acti vity evidence informed through accuraternepidemiological and behavioral information.rnThis study was aimed to exp lore evidences about the existence of HIY infection with somernselected explanatory variabl es. A sample of 1461 cases, who volu ntarily tested for HIY wasrntaken from several Yoluntary Counseling and Testing centers in Awassa city.rnAccording to the findings of the stud y, there is evidence showing the presence of significantrnassociations between HIY infection and explanatory variables like age, gender, marital status,rnoccupation and educat ional level of individuals. This study reveals that the epidemic is almostrnevenly distributed through a ll religious groups and all the residence areas (urban and rural).rnMoreover, groups of people who are at a hig her risk ofHIY infection are identified in this study.
