The purpose of this study was to assess the role of principals in managing quality ofrneducation in government secondary schools in Gullelie Sub city of Addis Ababa CityrnAdministration. With regard to the research designed employed descriptivernresearch design was adopted for data collection and analysis. The researchrnmethodology employed in the study was both quantitative and qualitativernapproaches. Accordingly, a questionnaire was prepared to be filled by teachers forrnthe qualitative portion, interviews and FGD were administered vice principals andrndepartment heads. It follows that a sample size of 120 questionnaires have beenrndistributed and of which 120 have been filled out and collected with 100% responsernrate. Data obtained through questionnaires were analyzed using statistical toolsrnsuch as mean and standard deviation. Hence, the findings of the study revealed thatrnthere were less significant leadership roles made by principals that canrnqualitatively improve quality of education. The study also revealed that there werernchallenges that block principals to manage quality of education such as inadequaternfacilities, low staff morale, poor supervision of schools, and frequent changes inrnpolicies. In conclusion, the role of school principals in managing quality ofrneducation such as support of students, improvement of school facilities,rnenhancement of teachers’ capacity, identification and solving of school problems,rnand reacting for the needs raised by schools to improve educational quality arernvery low. Finally based on the major findings identified, recommendations werernmade on school principals and they should be knowledgeable, professionally andrnadministratively competent, as well as resourceful so as to complement the effortsrntowards achieving the goals of the schools
